| The
question you probably want an answer to is which
kind of internet connection do
you need.
The main issues are as follows: 1. Dialups There are still some parts of the country where broadband is not available and so, unless you need and can justify the major expense of a leased line or satellite connection, dialup is your only option. A dialup can either connect through a normal analog telephone line, which is usually the cheapest option but with worst performance, or via an ISDN line. Most dialups only use 1 of the ISDN unit's 2 channels but some can use both though at an inflated price. Dialups can be genuinely unmetered, i.e. you can be connected constantly without interruption and no penalties whatever your usage. Most however have restrictions in how long you can be connected at one time and how much usage you can make of the connection in a given time period. Obviously the greater the restriction, normally the lower the cost. 2. ADSL Broadband This is now available in most of the UK and is generally a better bet than dialup unless usage is low and browsing speed not important. Contact us to check if you can receive ADSL. ADSL can be umetered or capped, meaning you can save money by limiting your usage. This does however mean you may miss out on many of the advantages of high speed permanent connection to the internet. The "A" in ADSL stands for asynchronous which means the upload and download speeds are not the same. Download is always much faster than upload. This means ADSL might be great for downloading large files but not so good for sending emails with large attachments. 3. SDSL Unlike ADSL where the up and down streams are Asynchronous, SDSL offers Synchronous upload and download speeds, i.e. the same in both directions. Consequently it is is rapid to send files as to receive it and this is especially useful if you are using VoIP (Voice over IP) for your telephony. SDSL is not yet widely available in the UK but will become so quite quickly. Check with us for latest availability. 4. Leased Lines If you need the performance of SDSL or ADSL and can't get it in your locality then a leased line is your only real option. Expensive but great performance and highly reliable.
