Pay-Per-Click Search Engines

A new development in the search engine business is the emergence of pay-per-click search engines such as Overture, Kanoodle, Sprinks and many others. The principal of these is that ranking position, subject to cursory editorial approval, goes to he who bids the most for each visitor who clicks on the link to his site. They are not so important in their own right, except maybe Overture, but more so for their usage by other conventional search engines.

For example the first three results on the AltaVista search engine are labelled "featured sites". In reality they are the top three paid for sites for the search phrase in question in Overture. In Yahoo! UK the top 5 results, called "sponsored sites" are in fact from Espotting, a very popular UK paid-or search engine.

The skill in this activity is finding the "good value" clicks. Here's an example. We have a seperate web hosting site. Web hosting is so competitive that the effort involved in fully optimising for conventional search engines would not necessarily be worthwhile and would be so demanding as to numb our minds! So we use ppc (pay-per-click) as well. The conversion rate of visitors to orders is very low. To be #1 on Overture UK for the phrase "web hosting" would cost maybe £3 per click and not be cost-effective, to be #1 for the less common but still numerous phrase "web space" only £1 but for the almost equally numerous "webspace" we pay just £0.08 (about 12 cents) to be #1. So we make sure we are #1 for "webspace" and forget about "web hosting". This illustrates that you can get a lot of well targeted extra traffic for very little if you know what you are doing or spend a fortune for little results if you do not.

We are building systems and procedures to be able to manipulate this pay-per-click market for the benefit of our clients' and our own web sites. The service we wish to offer is based on being given a monthly budget to spend on the client's behalf plus a management fee to pay for our time getting the best value and results. You would get much better value by spending, for example, $400 as a management fee and $200 to spend on click-throughs, than bidding $600 for placement on the wrong phrases in the wrong ppc engines. A budget of $200 to $300 per month for spending on the click throughs would be a good start for most sites but has to be reviewed case by case. However it is not a big risk as the results are very quick with these campaigns so, if the theory is right, it will be self-funding or better straight away.
