| Search engine positioning is the management of a web site such that it gains top 30 ranking for a selection of relevant key search phrases in leading internet search resources. It relies on detailed knowledge of how search engines like to see web pages structured and a high level of understanding of how and how often to submit pages to these resources. Success also relies on careful selection of target words and phrases used by prospective visitors in searching. There are "true" search engines, such as AltaVista, Google and AllTheWeb, which use a software robot, called a spider, to assess the content of a web page and and rank its relevance to one or more key phrases. Secondly there are search directories such as Yahoo!, LookSmart and Open Directory which use human editors to assess the suitability of the site to appear in their index and the relevance hence ranking of the site for certain key phrases. When NetSecrets began working to promote web sites three years ago there were under 1 billion web pages on the net, the estimate is now that there are in excess of 5 billion. There are fewer important search engines now than there were even a year ago and there are still only 30 slots in the top 30 rankings! The competition for gaining and maintaining top 30 rankings in the key search engines for commercially meaningful terms has increased many times over. There are far more pages chasing considerably fewer top 30 slots. Add to this the fact that some of the easier and more effective techniques for "tricking" the search engines have been ruled out by more sophisticated search engine technology and so we have, to employ english under-statement, something of a challenge on our hands. But let us not despair! We have the measure of these changes, we are quicker and lighter on our feet than the big search engine corporations and so will continue to keep ahead of the game.
